As companies gear up for the start of the New York International Fringe Festival, keep an eye open for some of the fun publicity and fundraising events that they have planned.
Last night I attended a cabaret at Don't Tell Mama benefiting Far Out, a new sci-fi musical comedy by Brian Breen and Michael Chartier being produced by Supreme Eyeball Productions. The evening featured the cast of Far Out singing a number of cabaret and musical theatre staples, as well as a couple of songs from the show. In addition to performing, the cast stayed around for a meet and greet, auctioned off several items (including the shirt off cast member Eddie Rabon's back), and handed out some promo CDs. While I will wait and see what Far Out is like, I will say that they have an incredibly talented cast (Nick Adams, Tiffan Borelli, Michael Breen, Ashleigh Davidson, Mary Katherine DeChiara, Jan DiPietro, Alden Fulcomer, Marcie Henderson, Holly Holcomb, Lorinne Lampert, Spencer Liff, Andrea McCullough, Eddie Rabon, Hollis Scarborough, Mykel Vaughn, and Timothy Warmen).
All in all, a terrific evening, and one that is being repeated all over the city as the various companies try to generate buzz for their Fringe shows.
If you want to get in on the fun, visit the Fringe website and find some shows that sound interesting to you. Visit their websites and sign up for their mailing lists. Visit their Facebook and MySpace pages. And above all, attend some of these events. It's a great opportunity to meet the cast and writers of this year's Fringe shows.

I always fringe, and try to give some much needed publicity during the festival.
